Jakarta Murugan Temple: A Symbol of Spiritual Unity and Cultural Heritage, a Blessing for Hindus
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – The Jakarta Murugan Temple, also known as Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam, stands majestically as a beacon of faith and cultural harmony in Indonesia. Located on Jl Bedugul No.2, Daan Mogot Baru Housing Complex, Kalideres, West Jakarta, this historic temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan. The temple serves as both a spiritual sanctuary and a symbol of the enduring cultural ties between India and Indonesia.
In Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan is revered as the son of Lord Agni, the god of fire. Often depicted wielding a spear, Lord Murugan is also known by various names, including Kartikeya, Kumara, Shanmukha, Skanda, and Subramaniam. He is venerated as the commander-in-chief of the gods' army and the guardian deity of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
Investortrust had the opportunity to visit the temple the day before its official inauguration on Sunday, February 2, 2025. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend this momentous occasion.
The Jakarta Murugan Temple is designed as a place of worship and interaction for followers of all Hindu sects, including Shaivism and Vaishnavism. The temple houses sacred statues such as Lord Murugan, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Bhuvanesvary, Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu & Goddess Lakshmi, Shivalingam, Lord Hanuman, Navagraham, Sage Agastya, as well as Idumban and Arapadai Vidu.
The temple complex also features a 40-meter-high Rajagopuram tower, symbolizing the grandeur and grace of God. A 21-meter-high statue of Lord Murugan is installed in front of the main tower, representing spiritual and religious ascension.
In addition to its religious features, the temple includes a multipurpose hall for community events and gatherings, a museum showcasing the deep Indo-Indian historical and cultural connections, and a serene garden for reflection and meditation.
Celebrating Diversity
The Jakarta Murugan Temple integrates Indian, Balinese, and Javanese traditions within its sacred space, reflecting the harmonious values of Pancasila, Indonesia's state ideology. It serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural center and tourist destination, introducing the diverse spiritual and cultural heritage of the archipelago.
Pancasila is the official, foundational philosophical theory of Indonesia, encompassing five principles often translated as belief in the one and only God, a just and civilized humanity, the unity of Indonesia, democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives, and social justice for all of the people of Indonesia.
The journey to build this temple began on February 14, 2020, with a groundbreaking ceremony led by renowned priests from India and Malaysia.
The temple's inauguration was conducted by the then-Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, and attended by national figures from the Hindu Religious Council, the Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, members of the Indonesian Parliament, the Indian Ambassador, and leaders from various religious and cultural organizations.
The temple had its soft launch on June 8, 2024. Hashim Sujono Djojohadikusumo, Chairman of the Gema Sadhana Supervisory Board, attended the event. The Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam Foundation was initiated by PP Gema Sadhana. Gema Sadhana is an organization focused on promoting social harmony and welfare among Indonesia's diverse communities.
In his speech, Hashim described the temple's existence as a miracle, noting the numerous obstacles and challenges faced during its construction over many years. However, through cooperation among various religious groups, the Jakarta Murugan Temple now stands proudly.
Hashim revealed that this is also one of President Prabowo Subianto's aspirations to protect people of all religions, races, and groups in Indonesia.
He also urged the public to be more grateful, as they can still help fellow religious communities, reflecting the religious tolerance in Indonesia.
"My message to all people is that we must not lose heart, we must be grateful, we are still on this earth, we can still help our families, our communities, our country, and our fellow human beings," said Hashim.
Inspiring the Younger Generation
The Jakarta Murugan Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of togetherness and will continue to inspire future generations of Hindus. This sentiment was echoed by Sharmila Baby, a Hindu devotee from Cempaka Putih. Sharmila expressed that the presence of the Jakarta Murugan Temple is a blessing for Hindus in Indonesia.
Here is a brief conversation between Sharmila and the Investortrust team on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Jakarta Murugan Temple:
