JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — State energy company Pertamina announces on Wednesday, Nov 19, 2025 in Jakarta that it has discovered about 724 million barrels of hydrocarbon reserves in the Rokan Working Area, marking its largest upstream find in the past decade and reinforcing Indonesia’s push for stronger energy security.
This discovery stems from one structure only and indicates that Indonesia’s non conventional reserve potential remains far larger, highlighting the strategic significance of the breakthrough.
The announcement comes as Pertamina accelerates its dual growth strategy to strengthen conventional oil and gas output while expanding low carbon initiatives including sustainable aviation fuel and refinery upgrades.
During a hearing with Commission VI of the DPR RI at the parliamentary complex on Wednesday, Oki Muraza said “in the upstream oil and gas sector we have succeeded in finding the largest discovery in the last ten years.”
He added that the discovery “is only from one structure and of course the potential of non conventional in Indonesia is far greater than that. This is one of the largest conventional and non conventional discoveries in the Pertamina Group.”
At Indonesia’s average oil consumption of roughly 1.6 million barrels per day, the 724 million barrels discovered could theoretically meet domestic needs for about 450 days, equal to nearly 1.2 years.
Pertamina has also begun sustainable aviation fuel production at a rate of 9,000 barrels per day, already supplying Pelita Air flights on the Jakarta Bali and Jakarta Singapore routes.
The company further reports progress at the Arun gas facility, expected to start operating in December 2025, as well as upgrades under the Balikpapan RDMP to raise refinery capacity to 360,000 barrels per day.
President Prabowo Subianto has previously instructed Pertamina to act as a pillar of national energy security, and the newly announced discovery strengthens that mandate by broadening domestic supply and supporting the Indonesia Emas 2045 vision.
