BI Launches QRIS Tap on March 14, No Scanning Required
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Bank Indonesia is set to introduce a new QR Code Indonesian Standard, or QRIS, feature that removes the need for scanning, enabling contactless payments with a quick tap. Scheduled for launch on Friday, March 14, 2025, this innovation promises a more seamless experience for millions of Indonesians already accustomed to digital transactions.
Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo said that the feature, called QRIS Tap, would debut alongside a reduction in the merchant discount rate (MDR) from 0.4% to 0% for Indonesia’s public service agencies (BLU) that manages various public-sector services such as hospitals, universities, and transportation, as well as for public service obligation (PSO) programs.
“This reduction will take effect on March 14, 2025, coinciding with the launch of QRIS Tap or contactless transaction,” he explained during a press briefing following the central bank’s Board of Governors meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday, Feb 19, 2025.
Tariff Reductions for Public Services
Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Filianingsih Hendarta reiterated that lowering the MDR for BLU and PSO transactions reflects the central bank’s commitment to support government initiatives, specifically those aimed at improving essential public services.
“Examples include public hospitals, MRT and commuter train services, Damri bus lines, tourist sites, educational institutions, and other publicly funded programs. We will reduce the MDR from 0.4% to 0%, effective March 14,” she said.
Filianingsih also noted that the launch date for QRIS Tap and the zero-percent MDR was initially planned for the end of the first quarter of 2025. However, Bank Indonesia managed to expedite the process for an earlier rollout.
“We are supporting the government’s digital transformation push, especially for transportation. Soon, the public will only need to tap their phones, as long as there is sufficient balance—no more scanning,” she explained.
