JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Indonesian state-owned energy company Pertamina and South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group have partnered with the West Java Provincial Government to develop a waste-to-hydrogen ecosystem in West Bandung. The initiative will convert landfill gas into clean hydrogen fuel, positioning Indonesia to accelerate its transition toward a low-carbon economy.
As part of the project, biogas from the Sarimukti landfill in West Bandung will be transported to Pertamina’s compressed natural gas (CNG) station and processed into hydrogen fuel. The facility is expected to be operational by 2027.
The agreement was formalized during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit and Convention held at the Jakarta Convention Center on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Signatories included Pertamina’s Project Director I for Business Development, Hyundai’s Head of Global Hydrogen Business, and the Assistant for Economic Affairs and Development of the West Java Provincial Government Secretariat. The event was witnessed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and the Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Eniya Listiani Dewi.
“This collaboration is aimed at harnessing the potential of low-carbon hydrogen production from the Sarimukti landfill,” said Pertamina Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and New Business Development A Salyadi D Saputra.
The project will use biomethane extracted from landfill waste to produce clean hydrogen, which will be distributed through Pertamina’s hydrogen refueling infrastructure. The facility will be based on Pertamina’s existing CNG station technology.
“Together with Hyundai and the West Java Provincial Government, Pertamina is developing this pilot project to strengthen energy independence and create new employment opportunities,” Salyadi added.
He emphasized that the initiative aligns with Pertamina’s long-term strategy to advance clean energy technology and reach net zero emissions by 2060 or earlier.
Three of Pertamina’s subholdings—Pertamina Power Indonesia, PGN, and Pertamina Patra Niaga—will be involved in the initiative, each contributing based on their core business expertise.
“This partnership underscores Pertamina’s commitment to accelerating energy transition and expanding our low-carbon business portfolio,” Salyadi said.
The West Java government also highlighted the importance of this project in addressing a pressing environmental issue.
“Waste management is a major environmental challenge in West Java. We hope this waste-to-hydrogen project with Pertamina and Hyundai becomes an effective solution,” said Sumasna, Assistant for Economic Affairs and Development at the West Java Provincial Government.
Hyundai Motor Group will contribute modular hydrogen reforming technology and help establish hydrogen refueling stations, while also planning to develop hydrogen-powered vehicles for the Indonesian market.
