Astra International Posts $1.36 Billion Profit as Automotive and Financial Services Offset Mining Slump
Key Takeaways

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — PT Astra International Tbk (ASII), Southeast Asia’s largest diversified conglomerate, delivered a resilient operational showing through the first nine months of 2026, relying on solid retail automotive sales and consumer financing to cushion a cyclical drag across its heavy machinery and mining contracting operations.
The Jakarta-listed group posted an attributable reported net profit of Rp 21.6 trillion ($1.36 billion) for the January–September period, down 12% from Rp 24.47 trillion in the prior-year period. The contraction was heavily driven by non-recurring items totaling Rp 2.96 trillion—primarily impairments and mark-to-market adjustments on equity investments—compared to just Rp 244 billion booked during the same period in 2025.
Excluding non-recurring impacts, underlying net income held virtually flat at Rp 24.6 trillion ($1.55 billion) against Rp 24.72 trillion a year earlier. Stripping out the exceptional charges, core earnings per share (EPS) advanced 1% year on year to Rp 616, bolstered in part by a smaller share float following aggressive corporate repurchases. Consolidated revenue stood virtually unchanged at Rp 243.87 trillion ($15.34 billion) versus Rp 243.61 trillion in 9M 2025.
Astra International’s operational performance functions as a macro barometer for consumer confidence, industrial output, and capital expenditure across Southeast Asia’s largest economy. The group’s multi-segment architecture demonstrated counter-cyclical balance: while statutory coal production quotas and operational halts at key mining assets weighed down heavy machinery deliveries in early 2026, domestic mobility demand and retail consumer lending accelerated, keeping group operating cash flows well anchored heading into year-end.
"Astra recorded a resilient performance during the first nine months of 2026. The group’s net profit, excluding non-recurring items, was stable at Rp 24.6 trillion," President Director Rudy said in a corporate statement. "Performance improved in the third quarter compared to preceding quarters, underpinned by higher mining contracting volumes, the recovery of Martabe gold production following its restart, and sustained automotive momentum. We expect these factors to continue supporting group performance into the fourth quarter."
Automotive and Finance Anchor the Bottom Line
The automotive division remained Astra's primary earnings pillar, generating a net profit contribution of Rp 9.79 trillion ($615.7 million), up 8% from Rp 9.03 trillion a year earlier.
In the four-wheeler arena, nationwide wholesale car sales advanced 21% to 679,000 units during the nine-month stretch. Astra’s branded deliveries—anchored by market leaders Toyota and Daihatsu—expanded 13%, securing a combined domestic market share of 49%. In two-wheelers, national motorcycle registrations grew 4% to 5.0 million units, with Astra’s Honda brand delivering a 3% sales increase and maintaining a dominant 77% national market share.
The group’s automotive component manufacturing division, PT Astra Otoparts Tbk (AUTO), added further operating leverage, expanding its net profit contribution by 15% to Rp 1.4 trillion ($88.0 million) on broad-based gains across aftermarket and original equipment manufacturing (OEM) segments.
Financial services delivered a complementary performance, with net earnings advancing 6% year on year to Rp 7.15 trillion ($449.7 million). Consumer financing receivables rose 6% from December 2025 levels to Rp 132 trillion ($8.30 billion), while new financing originations jumped 8% to Rp 92.5 trillion ($5.82 billion). Motorcycle financing net profit grew 4% to Rp 3.6 trillion, four-wheeler financing profit rose 6% to Rp 1.9 trillion, and general and life insurance subsidiaries contributed Rp 1.4 trillion, up 9% on higher underwriting and investment yields.
Mining Slump Moderates After Q3 Rebound
Astra's mining contracting and heavy machinery division—operated via PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR)—bore the brunt of earlier operational headwinds. Cumulative nine-month underlying net income for the segment dropped 28% year on year to Rp 5.07 trillion ($318.9 million). Factoring in Rp 2.2 trillion in non-recurring adjustments linked to geothermal and nickel holdings, reported net income slumped 59% to Rp 2.9 trillion.
The division's earlier contraction reflected temporary output suspensions at the Martabe gold mine, which reopened during the second quarter, alongside restricted national coal production quotas allocated under official Work and Budget Plan (RKAB) mandates. Gold sales reached 54,000 ounces versus 178,000 ounces a year ago, while Komatsu machinery unit deliveries fell 17% to 3,000 units. Overburden removal declined 7% to 766 million bank cubic meters, and coal sales retreated 23% to 7.1 million tons.
Despite the cumulative contraction, management highlighted an operational inflection point in the third quarter, with segment earnings rebounding 15% year on year as contract volumes accelerated and Martabe normalized extraction.
Wider Businesses and Capital Allocation Discipline
Astra's Wider Businesses segment—encompassing agribusiness, infrastructure, logistics, and healthcare—booked a 36% jump in underlying net profit to Rp 2.56 trillion ($161.0 million), supported by higher palm oil realisations at PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (AALI) and new contributions from modern industrial warehousing assets. Reported segment profit rose 7% to Rp 1.8 trillion after absorbing a Rp 766 million fair-value investment loss.
Capital allocation remained aggressive throughout the period. Between November 2025 and September 2026, the parent group completed a Rp 10 trillion ($629 million) share buyback program. An additional Rp 8 trillion parent buyback authorization remains active, while subsidiaries United Tractors and Astra Agro Lestari have unveiled secondary repurchases of up to Rp 2 trillion and Rp 400 billion, respectively, through December 2026.
Simultaneously, Astra launched a voluntary tender offer to acquire up to an additional 4.95% stake in Astra Otoparts at Rp 3,600 per share—a potential transaction valued at up to Rp 858 billion ($53.9 million) running through Nov. 11, 2026. The acquisition would elevate Astra's ownership in the component manufacturer to 84.95%.
Balance Sheet and Q4 Outlook
Consolidated equity attributable to parent shareholders rose 4% from end-2025 to Rp 238.1 trillion ($14.97 billion), with net asset value per share rising 5% to Rp 5,999.
Net cash balances (excluding financial services subsidiaries) moderated to Rp 1.8 trillion from Rp 7.2 trillion in December 2025, reflecting cash outlays for the acquisition of gold operator PT Arafura Surya Alam and the completed Rp 10 trillion share buyback. Net debt across financial services subsidiaries stood at Rp 66.7 trillion.
"Amid ongoing market volatility, we remain optimistic about the core earnings power of Astra’s businesses," Rudy noted. "Our priorities for the remainder of 2026 center on driving operational efficiencies, maintaining a fortress balance sheet, and deploying expansion capital with strict selectivity."
